A NAS for backup, not replication, purposes would AOK as long as one un-plugs the NAS when it is not actively backing up.
A NAS for replication, not backup, would be ok, as long as it has some sort of backup at least once a week.
LadyF, are my two thoughts above reasonable?

Backing up 40TB is going to be a long process how ever one does it.
For that much data a NAS would be a good idea.

If one had a computer with 'Thunderbolt' it would speed things up.

I'm still trying to understand how one gathers 40 TB of data.

the music HDDs are mostly all in FLAC format

One 6TB for classical music and concerts
    One "" for LPs
One "" for one kind of metal music
One "" for another kind of metal
One "" for Music DVDs and concerts etc

I have another one 6TB for movies

and I have lost one recently, so that would have made another one!

I guess I won't be able to backup all this until a couple of years, when the TBs price will drop
