Is the HD in a USB3 portable device the same as a USB2 HD?

So is the difference only in the interface?

USB3 is an interface specification. It says nothing about the device using it.

Many people buy a USB3 device drive based on the high advertised transfer rate of USB3. Then they are disappointed when they do not get this performance. In most cases performance is determined by the drive being used, not the interface to it. At the present time only an SSD can reach these speeds. No conventional drive even comes close.
