    Optical drive problem

I thought this was a hardware issue as the optical drive on my Gateway NV59 laptop will play cds and dvds, but no program will display track, artist info etc. as if unable to access gracenote or other databases. I replaced the drive and same issue. If I use an external USB optical drive, it works as expected. Running windows 7 pro 64 bit. Any ideas other than reinstalling windows?

Unable to access gracenote, etc is not a hardware problem with the drive. The drive has nothing to do with those functions.

Still, it's curious that he can access Gracenote when the external drive is connected.

Only time I've seen this type of thing is when the application is looking for either a licence key that is stored at a specific location or the general hardware layout mapping is used to ID the system, again for licence purposes. Not used any gracenote services for many years so cannot state any specifics of course

I ran scannow and chkdisk without result. When I play an audio CD, Winamp tries to access Gracenote and fails. Error was "bad disc data". So I guess it won't be solved until I reinstall or upgrade Windows. Thanks for everyone's help.
