Windows 7: After fresh install, only power button wakes laptop from sleep

Might be a good idea to check in the BIOS if any wake from sleep options are available, now that the DVD is in the right place & the primary boot drive. Reset the BIOS to recommended default settings as well.

I suppose it is possible that some drivers were not installed with the bootable USB for installing Windows, but it's probably doubtful.

Those icons in the task bar notification area should be easy to fix & usually just requires resetting the type of notification you want.

No new options, the Wake from USB is still the only one related as far as I can tell and it's enabled. The DVD isn't installed; both HDDs are still installed but swapped in their positions. I also tried resetting to factory defaults - no luck there.

In Device Manager, under Details and Power data, my ethernet adapter has "PDCAP_WAKE_FROM_D3_SUPPORTED" and therefor has the Power Management tab available with the option to wake the computer, whereas the keyboard and trackpad do not have that text... My googling seems to indicate that this is part of the problem, although I still wonder why that isn't there...

Just wanted to provide an update. I think Windows can be safely eliminated at this point (oddly), because I just installed Puppy linux to a USB stick and booted from that. It's a live Linux environment running only from system ram. I've tried suspending to ram with it as well, and I cannot wake the laptop up with either the built in keyboard or trackpad.

What brand of SSD are you using & does it have any software associated with it.

From what you have said about Linux not working it's starting to look like an HP driver problem.

I suppose to eliminate all doubt, perhaps you could try reinstalling the DVD drive & reinstalling Windows from your Windows DVD.

It's a LITE-ON IT SSD, and afaict it's a model that's made specially for Dell computers (at least Dell was the only place I could get a firmware update for it). I don't think a firmware update for an SSD could affect the operation of other system hardware though, right...?

I don't have the Windows DVD for this specific version of Windows 7 so I'd have to run the installer off of a USB key if that's all the same to you.

Your problem certainly has me baffled. You did mention in one of your Posts that you have a backed up image of your old hard drive installation. Could you try installing that on the SSD & see if Wake from Sleep then works.

I really wish I could spend more time tackling this issue, but blowing away the install right now isn't feasible... I have to return this machine to its owner. They said they'll just work around the issue of not being able to wake from sleep with the keyboard or touchpad.

I'm starting to doubt myself now, and I'm wondering if updating the BIOS may have somehow contributed to this issue. HP seems to make it rather difficult to rollback BIOS versions (the backup has mysteriously disappeared), so I may be SOL here. I guess I could consider myself lucky nothing worse happened.

Thank you for all of your help through this, I'm sorry I have to cut this off without reaching a solution.

Thanks for the update & I understand why you have to let it go. Yes, I think you might be right about updating the BIOS as being the culprit.

Power button no longer wakes computer from sleep
My current Win 7 installation was installed in July, 2013. From the time I installed it, I would put it into sleep mode by going to Start > Shut Down "arrow", and selecting Sleep every night. It would go to sleep and the power LED would flash. I would then press the power button the next day and it...
