Use PC keyboard with laptop

Hi Friends,

My laptop (Windows 7 Home Basic) keyboard is not working. Is it possible to use a normal USB PC keyboard with my laptop? Do I need to change any settings in the BIOS?

Thanks.

Yes, you are right. I just bought a new USB keyboard and plugged it in and it worked without any problems whatsoever, this was my first time using a desktop keyboard with my laptop, that is why I asked this question.

My laptop keyboard is behaving badly. When it comes to the log-in screen after a normal boot, it seems to enter password on its own and the screen starts to flicker. Plus, the touch pad stops responding every now and then for no apparent reason. Whenever a laptop keyboard is about to die or almost dead, it is common for the touch pad to stop responding as well? I mean do both of them die at the same time?

I know how to put in a new laptop keyboard as I did that a few years back on my own successfully, when there used to be a strange loud noise after pressing the power button and the keyboard would click things automatically. Thus I came to know that it had died completely, but this time around there does not seem to be any noise, but only automatic clicking of buttons is there. And the touch pad also seems to stop responding every now and then for no apparent reason. I intend to put in a new keyboard, but will that stop the touch pad from malfunctioning? Am I required to repair/replace the touch pad as well?

Thanks.

The laptop keyboard may have some short circuit. I had a laptop keyboard that was acting by its own. Till you replace with a new one, disconnect the flat cable from the MoBo.

I'm on a laptop right now, with a full sized Systemax USB keyboard and a wireless Logitech mouse.
It works GREAT! The laptop just senses the presence of them both on boot up, and all's well.

Cheers Mates!

As you found out, you can use a full size USB keyboard with your laptop. However, if you want to be able to use your laptop as a laptop, then that's not very practical. The good news is that replacement laptop keyboards can be purchased from Ebay and other places for a very reasonably price and are very easy to replace.
