Advice please on using a Startek USB drive enclosure

    Hi,
Can anyone advise me if a Startek StarTech.com USB 3.0/eSATA Dual 3.5 inch SATA III Hard Drive External RAID Enclosure Model S3520BU33ER has to be used as a RAID drive or can it be used to house two drives to be used independently? I was given this drive enclosure as a present.

    Thanks,
    Gerald

As I can see on the site 2-Bay External RAID Enclosure - eSATA, USB 3.0 | HDD Enclosures | StarTech.com
it is build to have 2x 3.5 inch SATA Hard Drive on a RAID Array or JBOD or Spanning.
As it has only one output (USB or eSATA) it will access the two disks as only one. This is MY interpretation. You should ask Startek.

According to a Startek support advisor, 'The S3520U33ER can be used in JBOD mode, which is the non-RAID mode'.

In JBOD mode you it will access the two disks as only one. Is like RAID 0 with a different name.

Copy of the transcript of the chat with Startek:

[03/10/2017, 18:13:00] Sam: Thank you for contacting StarTech.com.
[03/10/2017, 18:13:47] Sam: Hello Gerald. The S3520U33ER can be used in JBOD mode, which is the non-RAID mode.
[03/10/2017, 18:16:50] Gerald Bramwell: So the two drives would show as say E and F?
    [03/10/2017, 18:17:40] Sam: Correct.

Just as a note to what Megahertz is saying. I have a NAS running in JBOD mode. It uses two 2 TB disks, but I see only one big 4 TB disk.

Of course the Startek model may be different, but to my knowledge JBOD means one big disk...

    Thanks for the replies,

I have been in touch with the dealer I bought t from and they have given me a returns number for a refund so that I can purchase an enclosure for two separate drives.
