Win 7 - want current Mobo & Processor

Hi,

Some history: I plan to stay with Win 7 for a long time. I decided to move an unused 8 year old Gigabyte EP43-UD3L to the 65" TV as a screen and found it won't boot if there are USB hard drives attached. If I attach them after windows starts, they ID & work fine. Seems like time to upgrade... Looking today I find the new processors require Win 10 and to run Win 7 I need Gen 6 processors or earlier. I do not want to use Win 10.

Perhaps I might find advice here to save me from a lot of hassle...

What is a powerful 6th gen processor and decent motherboard that comes with a bios with 2.1 that has some overclockability to it that I can run Win 7 on? I've had Intel for years but AMD is a fine processor & I'd give that a go if it's a good bet.

Or.. is there some way of getting security updates to Win 7 with the new gen processors?

Thanks! I never expected Intel & AMD would suck up to M$ and make processors that Win 7 can't run on. I do have to seriously look at Linux. I don't really want the learning curve at this point...

All new to me as of three hours ago. If there are patches to use a new gen processor and have security updates, I'll go for the i5-8600K then and have the 6 cores & use the extra two for SETI.

Guess I'll have to start tracking down the patches & decide on a mobo/ram/cooler.

Here's what I suggest, in order to make sure there won't be any problems running (and updating) Windows 7: go here to buy what you need:

Click Start a System Build at the top left. Then Click Choose a CPU.

On the left, under "Family", click Show All, then select all of the Broadwell chips (5th Gen). If you want a bigger selection, select all of the Haswell chips (4th Gen).

They sell Windows 7, so you can get that from them.

There isn't much of a learning curve. Why not try out Linux Mint? I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how easy and stable it is. Go here to try it out: www.linuxmint.com. Create a DVD from one of the links under Downloads, and then boot your computer to the DVD to try it out. No need to install anything; you can run it straight from the DVD.

Is probably because USB-HDD is set as fist boot option. Enter BIOS and and change to the SATA HDD.

Newest Intel is CoffeeLake familly. (8xxx CPUs and 3xx chipset). I don't know if they can run Win 7, but Skylake (6xxx CPUs and 1xx chipset) and Kabylake (7xxx CPUs and 2xx chipset) can. To install you will have to add USB 3.x and SATA drivers to the installation disk.
Yes, M$ is pushing hard to Win 10. There is an update that identifies Kabylake (and CoffeeLake) and block updates. But there is also a workaround.
In other words, you can install Win 7 on Skylake or Kabylake if you able to disable Secure boot on BIOS.


I do not want to use Win 10. So do I.

There are many options (and prices) to build a new computer. The right one depends the use you're going to do with it.
