??windows can tell the difference between Sata & eSata? (AHCI enabled)

    question's in the title

so AHCI is enabled in bios & installed in windows (iastor & all that) so as to enable hotswapping

    I just noticed that:

    1) if I hotplug in a (internal) hard drive into sata, the new drive letter will appear in explorer just as it should, then it will disappear when I remove the drive

    so far nothing unusual

    BUT:

    2) if I put that drive into an external eSata-compatible enclosure (like some iof the Icy Box brand external enclosures) and plug that into my mainboard's eSata port, then the drive letter will still appear in explorer (as it should)
BUT the little icon in the lower-right part of the screen will also appear - as if I plugged in an external usb drive!!!! (it doesn't appear when I plug the drive internally, into normal internal sata)

in other words windows treats an eSata drive like a usb drive!

so how can it tell between esata & sata since esata is supposed to be "transparent"???
(that's the whole f point of esata: make an external drive look like just another internal sata drive)

and more importantly how can I fix that?

What You're seeing is Windows reading the drivers for the dock itself.

External drives, USB or eSATA are treated as removable drives and they have a "Safety remove" in the task bar. That is to prevent disconnecting the drive without un mounting it and corrupting the data.
In other words, is working as it should.

? but if I plug in the dock (with power cable + esata cable) without a drive inside it, windows doesn't react. it only reacts when I plug in a full dock which means it's the internal drive it's detecting right?

but then what's the purpose of AHCI (suppose to make "hotplug" possible) if you should never hotplug/hotunplug a drive to begin with? might as well keep the sata drives in IDE mode which is easier to setup & more stable (no 0x7b or 0x7E or other BSODs)
