Did I damage my internal hard drive with enclosure by pulling it out?

I have a 1tb internal hard drive from an old laptop that i have not used. But might have stored very little if any. I put it in an enclosure and connected it via usb to my chromebook. When i did this, i noticed it showed the files etc. But because im not that familiar with chromebook, ,that disappeared. Then i disconnected it from the usb port. Yes i didn't think at all at the time. When i connect it back, i get message from chromebook

The thing is the hard drive still seems to be vibrating a bit when connect to my chromebook. Does anyone know how could i check if it works? I dont mind everything wiped out of there because i dont believe i even put anything in it. I did recall it had like 2gb in one of the 3 files when it was opened etc. But because i dont know how to use chromebook that well, this happened. Does anyone have any tips on this? I assume my chromebook is fine but maybe i damaged the internal hard drive? This is so frustrating.

Does anyone know what i can do now? I had tried to click format device but then the datapart 1 keeps disappearing and reappearing etc.


The thing is i do not want to plug this internal hard drive with enclosure into my main laptop as to damage that. But i do have another windows computer where i could plug it into.


Does anyone have any advice? Oh man i can't believe this happened. The thing is if this was a usb or external hard drive, i dont think this would have happened but because it was an internal hard drive put in with enclosure, could this be damaged the hard drive?

I then shut down my chromebook while the internal hard drive is connected to the chromebook. Then disconnected it. Turned on chromebook and it does not recognize it as nothing shows up. When i click files, the datapart1 doesn't show up anymore. The enclosure with the hard drive there is some vibration when you hold it.


Does anyone have any tips on what i can do? Should i plug it into a windows computer? I would be using my old windows 7 desktop to test this but the issue is i dont know if its fully cleaned or might have virus etc. But there is no way im plugging the internal hard drive with enclosure into my main laptop which uses windows 10. Because nothing shows on the chromebook with that hard drive.

I would try starting the Chrome book with the drive attached.

A pure Linux OS may fix this, If I remember correctly the term you are looking for is called " dirty Bit ' searching for that and USB Drive may get you on the path to get it working again.

To get Linux working you could use either a Ubuntu Live CD or a Virtual machine, I don't really know anything about Chrome books so you may have to use another computer to do this.

Okay few things i want to mention now.


I plugged the internal hard drive with enclosure in a windows 7 desktop. It recognized it but said it had to format because of errors. I did this. Then i unplugged it and plug it again. Then it asked me to format again. I did check something where it check and there were over 200 million free clusters processed. It said no error as well. Someone said to download crystaldiskinfo and i did and there doesn't seem to be any issue with it.


Now the issue comes when i unplug it from desktop windows 7 and plug it into the chromebook. It will first recognize it with the blue light etc. But after that, it shows that same message over and over again where it say whoa you should not take out the usb without ejecting it first etc. Same message shows at least 20 plus times. But now its only once and twice. But issue is it does not recognize the internal hard drive with enclosure. Now when i turn chromebook off since i cannot eject the hard drive enclosure since it doesn't recognize it, i plug it into windows 7 desktop. It recognizes it as it does in computer

So if that shows up in my windows 7 desktop, that means the hard drive is not the problem right?



Because i then tested this by using an old usb stick. I plugged this right into the chromebook. It recognizes it. Then i eject it. Then i plug it back in again and i could open file on that usb stick. So that means that the chromebook usb port is not the issue, otherwise this usb stick would not work. But if the hard drive seem to work on windows 7 desktop, what is the issue then? Because i was pretty certain i damaged the internal hard drive enclosure when i removed it from chromebook when im not suppose to. But when i checked for errors on windows 7 desktop, well i believe i fixed the issue or formatted it? It shows up fine on the computer drive. Now i didnt move any files into it but if it shows 928gb free of 932gb... that means it works then right?

Hi there. I just plugged in a seagate external hard drive into the usb port in my chromebook. It recognizes it and has no issues. Thus this has nothing to do with the usb port on my chromebook.

When i plugged in the internal hard drive enclosure into it before this, it did recognize it for a second as it showed up with the name database i believe.

Then i did this again and you could see when you open files up, it shows the name of the hard drive as datapart. It would keep showing up and disappearing after few seconds




Then on the bottom right corner, it would have the same message over and over again in like 30 plus notificaitons

Okay so in those 2 usb ports on my chromebook, i had the usb for my wireless mouse in the top usb port. I just now decided to put that usb for wireless mouse in the port below it and then plug in the internal hard drive enclosure into the top usb port and does work on the other usb port. I only have 2 usb ports on the chromebook. The top usb port i had plugged in the usb for the wifi mouse i use.


So what does that mean? That the other usb port is damaged? Well that can't be it because a regular usb stick and a 1tb external hard drive works on that port. Right now i connected the usb for my wireless mouse to the usb port where it could not connect/recognize on my laptop.


I did not want to do this earlier in case it might damage the usb for my wireless mouse. Thoughts on this?
