a big thank you for all the help
After changing the registry did you change the BIOS SATA or JMicron setting to AHCI?

You mentioned 'sata controller mode ide selected'. IDE mode will not allow Plug and Play, only AHCI or RAID.
I would use AHCI mode.
Is the 'ex sata/pci-e* 1 option ex-sata selected' the JMicron card?
Does it actually say 'ex-SATA' ?

Did you re-start your computer after the changes?

Welcome to Seven Forums.

Is the external new or have you used it before?
Any data on it now?

Try baccini's suggestion and check if it will see anything when plugged in via USB.

Depending on your BIOS settings you may need to plug it in and power it up before you start your computer.

Let us know your SATA settings in BIOS. They should be IDE, AHCI or RAID.

There is some good trouble shooting info in this thread.

At first there was a windows partition on it for a desktop, but now it's all erase and unpartitioned. I've tried the drive on 2 of my desktops, the BIOS setting is AHCI for sata, tho for some odd reason i can't boot the external drive when plugged into esata. I did try the HDD in USB mode and works fine.

You need to initialize and partition the external HD.

Have you tried right click the external HD in Disk Management and click Format?
Use NTFS and simple basic.

When you are using the eSATA connection your computer looks at it like an internal HD, which must be initialized and partitioned in order to be seen and used.
When plugged in via USB, your computer sees it as a external device, and will show whatever is there.

If that doesn't work download and install the free program Partition Wizard.
Select the external HD, click on the partition tab and Format.
