Hello, I have made a change to a registry value I found to be associated with this issue, however it has not resolved. [HKLM-system-currentcontrol-services-i8042prt - set to "1"]
Any advice? I sincerely doubt it's the adapter (new) but I suppose I could buy another to check. I don't have another PC to try it on.
edit: for clarification, the keyboard is USB.

I bought six of those adapters through Amazon. They came from China, and NOT a single one would work.
Cheap Chinese JUNK!!! I threw them all in the garbage. I bought another one, from a company here in the USA and it works perfectly.

Not all USB keyboards will work with a PS2 adapter. Apparently the wiring is different.
Perhaps there are special PS2 adapters available to suit USB keyboard, may be worth trying.
Otherwise this website explains how to do a conversion & helps explain why the USB keyboard wont work with a PS2 converter plug.
USB to PS/2 Convertor
Here is the Adesso PS/2 to USB adapter I still use for all of my IBM PS/2 keyboards on multiple machines. I've been using it ever since discovering it years ago, as I'm an IBM PS/2 keyboard bigot and like the "concrete" touch and noisy clickety-clack of this device. I simply cannot get used to the silent and mushy touch of any other keyboard.

Ahh... I didn't pick that up. I see he's now edited his original post to clarify just that.
So I guess I'm now puzzled. Why wouldn't you plug a USB keyboard into a USB port? Why would you want to use a PS/2 serial port (which are of course harder and harder to find on new machines)? Is there some functional advantage gained? Will all of the new additional key codes on newer keyboards (which were not on the original IBM PS/2 keyboard layout) be supported?
I can certainly understand why one (such as myself) would want to continue using an IBM-style PS/2 keyboard (which, by the way, are still made today... although not by IBM... as exact duplicates of the old original ones first made 25 years or so ago, to satisfy people such as myself who just like the touch and sound of these dinosaurs) on a machine which didn't have a true PS/2 serial port to connect to. That's why the Adesso adapter is exactly what you want, allowing the old PS/2 keyboard and mouse to be used through a USB port on the newer PCs which lack the PS/2 serial port.
I guess I don't appreciate the reverse situation's viability. i can't imagine why it would be beneficial or desirable to just want to utilize the PS/2 serial port on your PC if you had one, for a USB device.
If you lack sufficient available USB ports on the PC to connect the USB keyboard, just get a USB port-multiplier (i.e. "hub") like this USB 2.0 one from Sabrent, and plug the USB keyboard into one of the new ports on the hub. They are also available in USB 3.0 style, if that's what you need.
Seems like a much simpler and more useful and practical and inexpensive gizmo, if you're looking for a gizmo that allows you to use what is really today's standard USB keyboard on a PC that doesn't have enough USB ports.
If you want to use the PS/2 port for your keyboard, you might be better off using an actual PS/2 keyboard. There are several available on amazon.com. Or, you can go with the real thing -- an IBM Model M keyboard:

I have two IBM Model M keyboards, one for each of my computers. One of the computers has PS/2 ports; on that computer, I plug the keyboard straight into the PS/2 port. The other computer has no PS/2 ports, so I have to convert from PS/2 to USB in order to use that keyboard with that computer.
An advantage to using a PS/2 keyboard which is connected to a true PS/2 port: if USB ever fails on your computer (this has happened twice to me on two separate computers), your keyboard will still work. Ditto for a PS/2 mouse.
