    @Marie SWE,

On your query in the PM to me "Has WD started with hardware encryption and removed the sata connector. when did they do that?"
Not quite nice to hang out half my PM in the open forum without asking me first. I will remember this one.

Here is the rest of the PM so everyone can read it.
    Hi! :)
Has WD started with hardware encryption and removed the sata connector. when did they do that?
You always learn something new here on the forum.
It was several years since I disassembled an external WD, so I think I need to update my hardware skills.
    Have a nice day.:)

Update on my experience with Seagate Rescue Data recovery service:

On April 20th, they told me my HDD arrived Netherlands. But till now, on their data recovery tracker, still no status showing that they are attempting recovery..
Have already dropped them an email to inquire 2 days ago but no reply yet.

Today April 27th, I received the replacement drive same model and size (to be honest, feeling very traumatic seeing it again)

I would like to seek advice here.
I have never set up partitions on HDD and through this experience I understand it is important.
Can someone advice me the best guide to do this?
And what other things I should do to this drive to ensure minimal future risks?

Update: 10 days after Seagate received my drive, I called them and ask for a status update.. They told me that there are working on it, still reading sectors. Sigh. It's weird that it is taking so long because I read that some can be quite fast. Still hoping for good news. I don't think I can take it if they fail because my western digital one is still RAW (was hoping if I open it after a week, it will miraculously come back. lol)

Just trying to release some anxiousness here.

Seagate called. Failed recovery. I cried, trembled, blamed myself, cried again. That's it.
They said firmware error/failure which they are unable to fix and caused them unable to assess the part where all my data are stored. Most times they said they can recover but this one they can't.

I asked them to send my drive back, I will get a second opinion on this.
Anyone has any thoughts, I would appreciate.

    As I'm dead inside.

oh no, it was very sad to hear.
I hope it's possible to save the data somehow, but it sounds unrealistic.
That's the disadvantage of hardware encryption, unencrypted it's only to replace the controller card and the hard drive is fully readable again.
