Windows 7 on a 4k TV

I was using a 40'' 1080p TV as my windows 7 display for years, few days ago I bought a 40'' 4k display and hooked it up. Everything works but the mouse is laggy. This PC is mostly about Plex media server and watching movies I'm not a gamer. Mouse lag is noticed moving the cursor around the desktop, I can live with that. But in the worst case scenario the mouse freezes altogether, in which case the only solution is a reboot via the keyboard. Everything works, my only issue here is the mouse freezing, this is what I have so far any advice appreciated.

Samsung 40'' MU6400 TV
GTX 660 gfx card
Intel core i7
16 GB DDR3
Gigabyte mouse XM300 (wired)

1. PC connected to enhanced hdmi port on TV
2. using 4k approved hdmi cable to connect to TV
3. windows 7 resolution set to native 3840x2160 @ 60Hz
4. updated latest nvidia graphics card driver
5. updated latest mouse firmware
6. text size in windows 7 set to 150% (largest)
7. mouse dpi is set to 2400 (seems to give the least lag)

Have you tried another mouse?

I've tried a couple of mice, I've dropped the Windows 7 text size down from large to medium, and I'm in the process of trying different USB ports on the PC. From reading around the forums mouse issues on 4k seems like a thing.

3 - 3840x2160 at 30Hz or 4096x2160 at 24Hz supported over HDMI. 4096x2160 (including 3840x2160) at 60Hz supported over Displayport. Support for 4k tiled MST displays requires 326.19 driver or later.

According to your card's specs 4k at 60hz is only supported on the display port. For HDMI you have to use 30 hz. Try either changing your display to 30 hz or getting a display to hdmi cable like this one. https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-.../dp/B015OW3M1W

Also keep in mind TVs and monitors are totally different. A TV doesn't work optimally as a monitor.

thank you so much for the help because I'm pulling my hair out.

3840x2160 at 30Hz is usable - actually it's a lot better, I haven't had the mouse cursor freeze since re-booting at this setting.

4096x2160 at 24Hz is unusable

I've ordered the DisplayPort to HDMI Cable, will be with me tomorrow

I suspect that is because you where using it at a refresh rate that your card isn't designed for on HDMI. I'm glad that it's worked out and I hope that the cable works. With that you will plug the display port end into your card and the HDMI end into your TV. You should then be able to run it at 60 hz. 4096x2160 won't work because that is beyond your TV's capabilities. That is larger than 4k. Good luck.

Cable arrived and it works! 3840 x 2160 @ 60Hz, mouse moves smoothly to all 4 corners of the screen, not laggy and no freezes. What a relief. You cracked it mate, display port was the way to go. I owe you many beers brother. Cheers!

I'm glad that it worked out for you. That goes to show that it is worth the time to look into hardware specs before making changes.
