hi
i have an insperon 531 with three 1gb strips of ram. if i add a 2gb strip will the total be seen as 5gb. there are no more free slots

i found this on the web but mime is not an "s" :

Dell's specifications say, 4gb, but it has been well documented that the 0RY206 motherboard can support 8gb using 4x2 DDR2 modules, with an Windows 7x64 OS..
But if you have a 32-bit operating system, this does not recognize 4gb of memory, 3±gb is all a 32-bit system can address.
Basically what it means is, while you can install 4gb of memory in the system, the reason it will not recognized is mainly due to 32-bit processors and/or 32-bit applications on memory address limitations.
64-bit processors & operating systems will recognize beyond the 32-bit limitation.
