    External Powered Casing for WD Purple Surveillance


    Hi all,

    I have an old 1TB WD Purple 3.5" WD10PURX designed for surveillance devices. I intend to reformat this and use it as a conventional external drive, mainly for data storage.

    The problem is that, i think, the power requirement is different, because WD Purple was designed for continuous 24hr i/o intellipower. i plugged it into an old barracuda external casing, with power adapter, and it doesn't really spin up. sometimes it does, but not for very long, and it drops off from my pc. i connect it to my pc via standard usb 2.0.

    Can anyone recommend the best WD external casing to use for this drive? from my research i see 3 potential : wd elements, wd easystore, and wd mybook.

    i'm concerned with the power issue. it is never stable.

    I've had issues with HDD external enclosures and adapters and I think it was either low power or the drive was bust. More than likely low power, probably amps. A new reputable enclosure should do the trick. If you go to Amazon, use this website to help do some research, then find a retailer with the lowest cost. Fakespot | Analyze and identify fake reviews

    Hi thanks for the reply. Yes, i agree with you. Low power. but don't 3.5" enclosures have its own power source. maybe my gear is really too old, i will buy a cheap one and test. i'm pretty sure the wd purple is new, not defective, have not sustained any external damage, lightning ... etc.

    Hey F22, i solved the problem by getting (instead of a HDD enclosure) a USB 3.0 Docking Station! have tested and it works great. Powered 3.0 is very stable, i will never transfer using 2.0 again.
    -tested reading & writing (moving across) 750 block of data from another external disk to the WD Purple at one go both slotted into docking station. dock station operated by a 4-(physical) core i7 laptop 16gb ddr3. this is a 2-slot dock.

    You're welcome. I didn't see your follow up because you edited your post and my CPL didn't inform me as such. I so happen to see this thread as you must have clicked something to thank me on the forum. I never even knew there was such a feature.

    Yeah, USB 3.0 is a lot quicker! I use 3.0 when I clone my computers all the time.
