Getting A Kyocera Printer To Work with Win 7

I have an old Kyocera laserjet FS 600 printer which came out in 1999. This was before USB ports became a standard feature on PCs, so it just has an old parallel LPT port, or a DB25 as they were known. Whenever I needed to print anything I'd connect it to my old PC running Windows 2000 and it would print fine.

Today I have a more recent computer which has no LPT ports, and has Win 7 on it, but I've never run a printer on it. So I bought a USB/DB25 adapter recently as it was a rare occasion that I needed to print something, and my old PC was put away and I didn't fancy setting it all up again. When I connected my USB adapter to the DB25 plug and plugged it into a spare USB port on my PC, a new USB device was detected which I presume was the adapter. I added the printer in Win 7 selecting 'virtual printer port USB001', after finding my old Kyocera model in the printer list shown. A message that the printer was successfully installed was displayed, and it was shown in the printer and faxes devices as default.

But when I tried to print a test page, the screen showed that a page had been sent but nothing happened. The printer lights did not react which they should do when about to print. I tried to delete the test page as it was still queued, but it took minutes before it finally deleted. I tried troubleshooting, but the system found nothing amiss.

The only clue I have to this issue is when looking at the printer properties and tried to configure the USB001 port, an error message appeared saying 'this operation us not supported'. When I tried to delete the port a similar message appeared and I could not delete it. So something seems wrong there.

I'd be grateful if someone experienced with printer installations could help me out here, as I appear to have exhausted my somewhat limited knowledge of that area.

No. Why would I need to if the printer is listed in W7? I thought the whole purpose of Windows providing drivers for listed printers is that they are the appropriate ones else what would be the point?
