GearHead Wireless Touch keyboard - disable tap-to-click

I've owned this keyboard for a few years and have been using it with my HTPC, a DELL ZINO HD (AMD Athlon Neo X2 6850e 1.8GHz 3GB RAM AMD HD4200 Windows 7 Pro x86 SP1).

It is a small-ish keyboard with built-in touchpad and a bluetooth USB receiver for the PC.

The keyboard/trackpad function perfectly. My only gripe is that it does not come with drivers, relying instead on Windows drivers.



While those are functioning properly they lack advanced options for the trackpad, namely disabling tap-to-click.

My teeth gnash every single time I move the mouse cursor across the screen and it performs either a click or multi-select action! GRRRR!

We are all familiar with Synaptics drivers options to disable all this functionality (my laptop has this). I have tried so many different Synaptics drivers but none worked. Some would install but would later fail to detect the trackpad forcing me to revert to the MS drivers.

I have already disabled the "Activate a window by hovering over it with the mouse" option under ease of acces which had no effect.

Is there any way to permanently disable the tap-to-click and other features of the trackpad using the MS driver? I just want to use the trackpad for cursor movement.

You can't. I went over this with the tech support. They said maybe in a future version, but not this one. I was always inadvertently dragging folders into each other in windows. You just have to learn to use steady pressure on the pad.

I read the comments posted in the Amazon link. Please note it's not just this keyboard but ANY third party keyboard that doesn't come with its own drivers. Do a search on Amazon/Ebay for wireless keyboard - you will find all types in different shapes and sizes. All the ones with built-in trackpads claim "No drivers to install - Plug n Play!" (I.E., it will use MS default drivers). I purchased a different wireless KB with trackpad, very small, about the size of a TV remote. Same problem, no drivers included, uses MS drivers.

I can see how the tap-to-click feature could be useful in some instances but it is an absolute annoyance when using Netflix (wrong video keeps getting selected).

This is something to be aware of for anyone planning to purchase a wireless keyboard with built-in trackpad. If the manufacturer doesn't supply drivers there is no way to disable tap-to-click/multi-select.

I guess it's time to try one of those Air Mice on Amazon.

It doesn't make any sense that they would provide a touchpad on the keyboard which doesn't work properly.

It may be that the "touch" sensitivity is set too high such that, when you're moving the cursor, the pressure from your finger is causing the "click" before the cursor is in proximity to what you want to select.

You also might want to consider using two fingers for scrolling and then the one finger tap. As I understand it, you can double tap on the touchpad to see some arrows which will enable you to change from one finger scrolling to two finger scrolling and vice versa.

If you go to Control Panel, Keyboard and mouse, there may be some options for making adjustments.

I understand what you want to do and can't find any way of doing that. I was trying to find an alternative that may make the touchpad usable for what you want to do.

I'm well aware of the two-finger scroll feature - it performs the same function as middle mouse click - it scrolls the page but DOES NOT move the mouse cursor.

I have been wrestling with this issue for 2 years prior to registering here. I am a Google ninja so I don't need help with that - As I stated I have followed numerous threads/advice including trying different drivers with no success. I am well aware that it is the fault of GearHead for not providing proper drivers relying instead on the OS drivers. My point is there are practically hundreds of wireless keyboard/trackpad devices currently available which also lack the ability to disable tap-to-click because they rely on Windows drivers. I have seen a Logitech KB that supposedly comes with its own drivers but it's a full size KB, not compact like my GearHead.

I gather that I am one of the 3 people in the world who uses Windows 7 as a Home Theater PC since no one else has encountered this issue.

As a work-around I have created an Autohotkey script that allows me to move the mouse cursor with the keyboard cursor keys. It's kludge-y since the cursor moves at a preset speed so no proportional mouse movement.

I've been looking at Air mice on Ebay/Amazon and may order one of those.

I may even consider removing Windows 7 and installing Android OS since that will satisfy my HTPC needs (Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, play videos from USB).

Both my mouse and keyboard are wireless and Logitech but, as you mentioned, they are full size. Logitech has it's own software and drivers unlike GearHead (at least for your keyboard). This is on my Desktop. My Dell work station uses Synaptics for the integrated keyboard and touchpad controls.

Looks like you found a solution, albeit, as you said, it's kludgy.
