d drive not working

I put a CD in the slot. It went in normally but nothing happened. Cannot find a way to eject it. Windows Explorer does not list the drive. I haven't used it for a while so not sure when the problem could have started. Yesterday i uninstalled Norton 360 and installed Norton Security. I did that online - no CD involved. I doubt this is related but maybe. What could be the problem and how can i get the CD to eject?

Not sure what happened but on waking computer from sleep I got a black screen. Did power off/on twice. Second time got message that i don't remember and clicked it. CD popped out on its own. That CD was one I found and maybe it was the cause. A little apprehensive but will now try a CD known to be good. Hopefully all is well again. Wish me luck.

As far as I know all cd drives have a Eject Pin Hole located somewhere in the front of the unit. Use either a paper clip that you bend one end straight and poke it in the hole or a sewing needle may work.

Note: A sewing needle even on the non pointed side can poke a hole in you, It requires a bit of force to move the lock mechanism Use something hard to push it not a cloth.

This is one possible location, I have seen some on the door itself.

This is an all-in-one Dell PC. It has a slot that sucks the cd all the way in if you push it part way. It doesn't have a drawer like you pictured. And I see no hole. I just did a system restore but now is bedtime and will see if things are back to normal tomorrow. Thanks for info.

Hi robert808,

It sounds like the CD/DVD is broken!

Have you got an external CD/DVD player that you could use to test?
Have you checked inside the desktop just to make sure everything is connected correctly and fully?
How did you get on with testing it with another CD?

Can you post a screenshot of the Disk Management please => Click Start => right-click Computer => click Manage => click Disk Management.

I hope this helps!

You should be able to Eject the disk from Windows Explorer. Open Windows Explorer, go to My Computer, select the DVD drive and right-mouse click the device and select "Eject" from drop-down list.

I would say that the drive is damaged.
Go into BIOS and see it he drive is listed under SATA. If not, you must replace the drive.

You can replace the CD/DVD drive with a HDD caddy and install a small (128G - ~US$30) SSD for windows and programs on it and use the HDD for data only. You will have the speed of a SSD and the space of a HDD at low cost.
CD/DVD drive can be 9.5mm or 12.7 mm (thickness)

Now not sure if problem was caused by the CD or maybe by windows update. I did a system restore to just before the update. I tried another CD and everything is OK now. Here's a bit from the update history. Thanks to everyone for help.
