Confused about the use of an NVMe device.

I would like to use NVMe for my systems O/S.

I doubt you have an M.2 slot but you probably have a free pci-e slot so you can use an adapter like the one below to get support for an M.2 nvme drive.

Depends if the bios contains nvme module. Highly unlikely. Probably requires a modded bios.I believe the samsung 950 pro was unique in that it contained the necessary oprom. That might work, but hard to find now.

Maybe possible with an ahci disk such as samsung 951. Suggest you ask at win raid forum.

Are you sure it worth the bother? In the real world, how much benefit is there over sata3 ssd?

Some manufacturers have released bios updates for older models - gigabyte for the b75 and z77-ud5, I think Asus released update for their top ivybridge board. Otherwise enthusiasts do their own bios mods.

Another way is to use duet YouTube

I have a Samsung 951 M.2 SSD. On the benchmark test it shows as 1951MB/s (read) and 680MB/s (wright).

Although it's much faster than a SATA 3 SSD (~550MB/s), boot time and other tasks are the same.

My advice is: Even if you have a M.2 PCIe 3.0, buy a good 2.5" SSD.
