Gray screen of death

Hi all,

Recently, after a mild knock to my laptop screen, the display is no longer working and instead just displays a gray screen when turning it on, although just to be clear the system itself still works perfectly (using my TV with HDMI now), it's just the display. I can still see the backlight but the display itself goes from gray to multicoloured with vertical streaks. Not my laptop, but it looks similar.

I've had this problem before, and I do recall it fixing itself somehow, but it took months and I think I just got lucky. I presume it's the ribbon cable but it could be something else, do I really have to take it apart to check? Or is there a simpler way.

Toshiba Satellite L770-14C, Windows 7.

Thank you.

For sure it's a hardware problem.
It may not be the same problem as before but as you have fix it before, try again.
Search for "laptop gray screen" . Discard windows issues as yours is hardware.
Good luck.

Great, because opening laptops are so much fun. May as well get some duster before I open it, give it a clean out as well, I mean I already have the anti static wristband.

So I dismantled the laptop, made sure everything was in place (from the photo I would say it looks right, but you decide), and also gave it a dust out, then tested it on and everything booted up as before... all components work but there's still a gray screen.

So... problem not solved, gonna need a bit more assistance. Do you think the problem resides in the screen itself, or have I missed something? Need to know before I put it back together.

See if there is something on youtube for repairing/replacing the screen for your make and model ( you haven't told us whether you have already checked so I assume you haven't)

Well, I managed to 95% fix the screen. After checking everything was in place, and moving the screen and checking the hinges, it now works except upon bootup where it's gray for a short while, but I can just plug it into my TV through HDMI until login then my screen comes on, and I remove the HDMI. And even though I lost the locking clip I manged to secure the ribbon cable after a while of trying for my keyboard by lightly pushing down the pins, and securing it with a bit of tape.

So... 40 saved from a PC shop, touch wood.
