New acer monitor not being detected

I just purchased a new acer LCD monitor to replace my super old LG one and plugged everything in but my PC seems to not be detecting the new monitor. Its connected to my pc via the blue vga cable that came with it. I know its receiving power because I can step through the input options with the buttons on the underside of the front of the new monitor. I have VGA selected but it just says 'no signal' and goes blank. Heres where it gets ****y: since it didnt work I unplugged it and reconnected my old LG monitor that has worked for ever. I had to hold the power button to reset my pc and after restarting it comes up saying windows did not shut down properly and asks if I want to start windows normally (this is the old monitor now). I hit enter and it seems to be about to load the windows user select screen but then it goes totally black, all I can see is my white mouse cursor.
As a side note my gpu driver should be up to date as I just updated it like a week ago.
Im feeling pretty beaten by this as I am worse off than when I started and currently cant even use my pc.
Please help me figure out whats going wrong here.

    Update

Okay so apparently the vga slot at the back of my pc doesnt connect to my graphics card so I have to plug the monitor in "down below" in the dvi slot. The new acer is now connected there via an hdmi cable and a hdmi female to dvi (24+1) male adapter. I am getting the same thing on boot up as I was getting with the old monitor. Windows boots and says 'starting windows' then goes to a black screen with only my white mouse cursor showing.

    Welcome to the Forum

I would fist try to boot using the old monitor on the DVI connector.
Try to press F8 and boot in safe mode.
