usb drives not seen with system drive swap

    Hello forum,

A bit of a mad one (it seems). a google hasn't turned up anything relevent

to cut a long story short,

I was running a 2.5"hard drive (500GB western dig I believe), intending to install an SSD (samsung evo 860 500GB). I connected the SSD externally via usb-to-sata cable, and did a successful copy. I've been running with the SSD no problems for several months.

every so often, I connected a 2.5" hard drive (500GB Toshiba), via usb-to-sata cable, and ran a clone backup. it seemed to do this no problems.

I've just had my first "system error" (SSD currently installed), and am needing to revert to the hard disk backup. I removed the SSD, and installed the Toshiba hard drive

(intending to boot up from the hard drive backup, and clone straight to the SSD, then install the SSD back again)

the laptop boots up more or less OK with the swapped backup hard drive,

problem- booting up from the backup hard drive, I don't get any USB drives showing

wireless usb mouse and keyboard work, (I noticed I don't get my SD card drive letter showing), the SSD isn't seen when I plug it in via usb-to-sata cable

admin tools/computer management/disk management doesnt show any drives apart from operating system drive, and CD drive.

I can get a screenshot but when plugged in, the SSD and my SD card reader, show up with [yellow] exclamation marks in device manager, with 'cannot start code 10'. some searches suggest deleting the usb hub from device manager and let them be re detected again, which I've done, no success.

the samsung evo had 'rapid' mode enabled (which I've disabled for the temp. installed hard drive), I don't know if that's relevent

let me know if there is any more detail you need

    thanks for info.

If you have samsung magician or similar installed, first try turning off rapid mode. If that doesn't do it, then uninstall samsung magician. You can then reinstall it.

wow.... {thanks}. so un installing magician worked. so under samsung magician software, usb hub & hub controllers etc, and wireless usb keyboard/mouse were working, but no drive letters (usb sticks, card readers, external hdd's).

so next time if I need the backup, it's un/re installing the magician software.

Why do you need magician installed?

I'm assuming it's the same as having chipset drivers installed? software for the SSD?

You don't need it. And it doesn't help to run the SSD. It's used to set up the SSD when you clone a HDD to it.
I found out that it's more part of a problem than part of a solution.
