LGA 1150 socket

I have an MSI Gaming 5 board that currently has a cheap 3250 pentium cpu, running win 8.1. I'm starting the process of rebuilding 3 of my machines.


This MSI/3250 system is currently being used for an IP camera security system. ATM, it has 3 IP cams with more to come. I'm using Blue Iris software. The CPU is maxed out most of the time.



There are a few 1150 socket CPUs around (in example, here).


But I'm wondering if this combo (MSI, i7 4790K/16GB RAM) will be up to the task. I do plan on getting a few more cameras (bringing the total to 5 or 6).


Will this be optimal for my usage, or should I reserve the board for another use and start fresh for the IP security cam system? If start fresh, recommendations on CPU/Motherboard/Ram?



I plan on staying with Win 8.1.

I will likely be upgrading the CPU to extend the life of the MSI board mentioned above anyway, but another possibility for the "IP cam system" is the 'hand me down' strategy, using the board/cpu/Ram from an existing machine that is going to get a rebuild.


The specs:
Asus Maximux VI Hero (1150 socket)
CPU i5-4670K
32GB Gskill RAM


The only possible issue I see is the non hyperthread i5 cpu.


Opinions? Can this combo handle 5-6 IP cams on Blue Iris software, (triggered) recording throughout the day?

I don't see why not. I'm thinking the biggest factor in the computer would have to be the GPU for video rendering. That and perhaps the CPU.

I think you overkilling. Most of the security systems on the market has CPUs less powerful than your current 3250 pentium cpu.

I kinda figured that and thought a simple Nettop would suffice.

The MSI with the 3250 at idle is about 85-90% cpu usage. When recording, it's 100%, and doesn't capture all the video. It could be the Blue Iris software, but it's great software.

The high CPU usage is probably due to video compressing, but I think the main problem is Win 8.x
How much memory you have on the MSI/3250?
A light Linux solution is much more appropriate. The problem can be to find the Blue Iris software Linux replacement.

16GB RAM, but RAM usage only shows between 1 & 2 GB. Also, I forgot to mention, but given that I was using the MSI onboard video, I thought that a decent dedicated video card would help offload some of the burden the CPU was having to handle. I installed a Radeon 7870 I had lying around. No change.


It's too bad Blue Iris doesn't have a Linux version.

I just ordered an i7-4790K. It should handle this machines duty (I hope). If not, I may have to explore different software options. I'll post back once it's in and running. Thanks for your comments.

I just installed the 4790K. CPU usage dropped from high 80s & 100% to 21%. That 4790 runs hot though. With the stock cooler, it's averaging around 60-65° C, which is about normal, from what I've read. Anyway, problem solved.
