All external HDD I've seen are very fragile.
I have a WD 1T 3.5-inch HDD (Black) inside my desktop, with Windows 7, only for backup. Every Friday, I open the case side, attach the power cable, boot from it and backup \Users\Luiz from my normal data disk.
Another advantage is that, if my normal system fail (Windows SSD and / or Data HDD), I can boot from the backup disk and restore disk images or repair with the tools I have on it.

If you decide to go on with a External HDD, remember: When in use, never, ever touch it or move it or you may damage the disk.

Major issues with using an internal drive for backups ...

A fire can destroy the backup and the master data

If the computer is stolen so is your backup

If your system is compromised by A Virus or ransomware, so is your backup data

Modern specialised external drives, (and indeed internal drives), are designed to be moved around even when in use, and they can be attached to the computer, the backup made and then removed to a safe place

If my house get on fire or a thief enters my house and steal my goods, loosing my data is my least concern.

If my system is compromised by A Virus or ransomware, my backup won't as it stays disconnected from the MB.

I disconnect my HDD
Agree with statement new HDDs are not as susceptible to platter damage by moving or touching it.
Dropping it while running, not good.
moving it while running, I do it all the time, no issues. you can feel the gyroscopic effect of the platter spinning for sure.
If you are not sure, probably not doing it is the best choice until you obtain my information.
SSD not so.
