Chkdsk - Deleting corrupt file record segment - What gets deleted?

    Hello,

During shutdown, the power was shut off. At startup computer went to chkdsk saying this:

"One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue. Windows will now check the disk."
    and
    "Deleting corrupt file record segment"
    And it started to delete...

I was worried about this, since I don't have a backup of all of the data on the HDD, so I aborted and started the computer.

The HDD is from an old Win VISTA, with the backup and OS partion not in use and a 3rd partition in use on my Windows 7.

Accessing the HDD is really slow - thumbnails doesn't show, copying files is really, really slow.

What do I do now? Can I run any Windows repair stuff without having to copy everything from the HDD - fx. chkdsk? Or something else? Or should I backup first if it is possible? It is so slow it might simply stall...

What does "Deleting corrupt file record segment" mean? Does it delete data?

Welcome to the forum. This can be caused by bad sectors and a dying hd basicaly your only choice is let check disk run What to Do When File Segment Becomes Unreadable?

Thank you for your reply and for welcoming me to these forums.

The computer have been occupied trying to solve this, hence my late reply. Really appreciate your time and the link you have provided. I will now look into this information.

I tried running the "check disk" option via Windows pathfinder, checking both boxes of "solve errors automatically" and "repair broken sectors". But after having it doing this for days and the green bar only moving a tiny bit I had to stop it. After this the disc was unusable via Windows, and next time restarting computer i now warns me that the hdd is failing and should be backupped. Then, now it is not showing via Windows, so now I might not be able to repair it. It is probably totally gone now.

I will read your link and try and gather information. Also I am looking into starting the computer via a Linux disc to see if that can find the HDD so try and save some stuff.

Thanks again! Glad to be part of this great forum and hopefully learn some to one day be able to help others as well.

"...I tried running the "check disk" option via Windows pathfinder, checking both boxes of "solve errors automatically" and "repair broken sectors..." Do you know if the HDD is a hybrid HDD? If yes, was it defragged by any 3rd party defragger? I ask because my early hybrid HDDs were bi-monthly or monthly defragged -- and eventually started to fail, once the failing process began, the HDD went from bad to worse pretty quickly. Failure can be measured in weeks or days or for some - in hours.

6/2 addendum: When I first purchased the hybrids, I did not realize that they were a combination of tiny-tiny SSD and big-big HDD. After I was enlightened, I worked quickly to disable any/all defrag possibilities.

I wouldn't recommend defragging an SSD or a hybrid for essentially the same reason, shortens the life of the drive.

It's a regular - and old - HDD, nothing hybrid or SSD.

The harddrive was from another computer sold with VISTA, and later, when that computer kicked the bucket, VISTA was "isolated" via partitoning and the rest of the drive used as storage on this Windows 7 computer. At first i was a "backup" drive in the sense it worked as a very simple backup in storing copies of files from other HDD just to have an extra copy.

I will definitely take notes of the info, RolandJS and look into the links you provided, Snick.

This stupid situation will probably lead to some updates and changes on the computer, and I might very well look into adding an SSD for the system drive at least, so your info and links are very kindly appreciated.

I know I - and the case - is changing and moving in another direction in the sense that I have been experiencing a lot of new stuff with the HDD disappearing from Windows pathfinder etc.

I opened the PC-case and checked all connections and such. Disconnecting and reconnecting them all. I could have sworn that the SATA connectors needs to be "squeezed" to be disconnected but these was very easy and loose to disconnect - maybe an issue? - anyways after this I turned on the PC and now I was met with the black checkdisk screen again... progess?

This time it said something along the lines og faults because of a newly installed software application...? And then it was "unable to run the test"... or something along these lines... Then it started...

I am sorry I don't have any more and better information but it was happening really quick and the information isn't saved anywhere... It came and went so quick!

Anyways... Now the HDD is visible in Windows pathfinder again, and it is actually functioning again in the sense that it is snappy and reacting quickly, showing thumbnails and such and I can "quickly" copy files again???

Thus, now I am trying to save as much extra as I can, and then I will try and run checkdisk via Windows again. I am gonna keep you posted. Confused about this situation but positive about these changes...

Also - sorry for my english in my posts and replies. English isn't my first language, but I hope i am understandable.
