Please recommend a W7 compatible External SSD. Prefer 2TB

My 10 year old Lenovo W510 Thinkpad running on W7 presently is backed up by a 5 year old 1TB My Passport HDD. I would like to buy a 1 or 2 TB SSD drive for backup and also to Image my Thinkpad from time to time. From what I've read a SSD would be safer for long term backup.

Not a great idea anyway. An SSD drive is normally used for performance purposes so, as an internal disk mostly. I consider it mere wastage of money to use an SSD drive for back up purposes. For imaging & backup purposes, buy an external harddisk. You can get one with 3 years of warranty.

I would rather suggest to upgrade & replace the internal hard disk drive with an SSD. You may get the related information there : Crucial System Scanner, etc.

As for compatibility with Windows 7, Check with the selected SSD's product support page. Normally, replacing the inbuilt windows 7 disk defragmenter with Defraggler should be enough.

    Thanks. ...

    Thank you Vineet

I was considering the SSD backup because the physical size would be smaller, and I have read that they are more reliable/durable than HDDs. Right now my only backup is a WD Passport HD that I travel with. I have already replaced the internal drive with a SSD. Although I have nothing to compare it with, my 10 year old laptop seems blazing fast with a SSD.

It will be a lighter for carrying around,. There are premade versions, though you might prefer to make your own.
Get a 2tb ssd you like (they are not particularly cheap at that size)

then put it in a case which can be found in the usual stores

If you don't need it NOW, don't buy it. If you need it on the future, it will be better and cost much less.
You have a 1T Samsung 860 SSD and a 1T My Passport HDD. A perfect pair.
    Regularly update the disk image.
Once the My Passport HDD is attached, don't move it.
