One method good for creating a ram disk in 2000 and XP might be able to work on Vista and 7 can be seen at SpeedGuide.net :: Ramdisk Guide They provide a driver there good for the two previous versions.

Again that also outlines just how voiltile ramdisks can be since everything exists in the active ram until the power is removed at shutdown or any simple logoff from Windows if not a full restart. The faster speed is a direct result of nothing being loaded into ram but already being there to start with.

With slows cpus and only what 64-128mb seen a decade ago how would you speed things up a bit? That was a solution available at the time.

and a pretty good solution it is, until you power down.

i managed to find Virtual Hard Drive Pro v2 by FarStone and it done the trick, but i can get windows disk management to even show its there, so i cannot use it for anything apart from file swapping, not even HD Tune detects it

With a ram disk you have to suffer the fragility for the speed there. That's the unfortunate side of that. And since that is an item loaded and run in ram and not an actual physical drive there isn't any way for HD Tune to detect it or have it displayed by the disk management or any other drive tool.

For detection if possible or to simply map any virtual drive you would need a virtual drive mapping program of some type that replicates the virtual environment to some extent in order to map and illustrate it. You would be getting into some heavy math probably for creating a 2d or possibly 3d representation.

On the other hand for preventing data loss you would then start looking at a physical device that replaces a physical hard drive entirely. i-RAM In Detail - Review Tom's Hardware : Can Gigabyte's i-RAM Replace Existing Hard Drives?

You have to run RAMdisk in compatibilty mode, and I found formated in exFAT, the speeds increase by a little.
