Right now i have 4gb of ram

What is the best ram i could get for this laptop that is 8gb?

Right now it kind of does the job but it does delay alot.

There are several Compaq Presario CQ71 series laptops, so we need to know which model you have.
What is the exact serial number(S/N) and product number(P/N) on yours?

I believe they all support a maximum of 8 GB(4 GB x 2) of DDR2-800 MHz RAM, but I am not sure.
If I am correct, the most you can install is two 4 GB modules.
You cannot install a 8 GB module.

The Compaq Presario CQ71-320SA laptop is more than 10 years old, so HP no longer maintains a fully functional support site for it.

According to the memory sites I checked, it supports a maximum of 8 GB of DDR2-800 MHz RAM.

That means no more than 4 GB can be installed in each of its 2 memory slots.
4 GB + 4 GB = 8 GB

Use HWinfo. it's a portable. Dont need to install.
Go to the memory and see the brand of the one installed.

I dont see anywhere i can use it without installing HWinfo?

I tried installing too after that but kept getting errors.

a better alternative app would be using CPU-Z and looking at the SPD tab
the ZIP version is a "portable" one without needing an install

older versions of CPU-Z can be downloaded as well as some old versions don't require the KB4474419 update unlike with recent versions
