Based on the settings when the hard drive is connected directly to the IDE cable, use the same when plugged into the caddy. Use the same cable connector and make sure it is seated properly, not upside down or missing any pins, pushed all the way in. Also, make sure the power connector is also seated properly. The same is true when putting the hard drive in the tray, make sure the connection is not upside down and fully seated and that the power cable is likewise fully seated.

After all this, if it still doesn't work, it must have defective electronics or internal connections. Give it back and try a different brand. I like the convenience of my drive trays!
