Why does my HP Laserjet 6p always disappear?

I'm running X64 Home Premium and my default printer is a Laserjet 6P. It installs correctly with the latest drivers and works fine. But it always disappears from my Devices and Printers listing. If I uninstall and re-install it comes back on the list but later on it will disappear and the printer still functions and shows in Device Manager. Does anyone know how to make it stay?

Go to services, set blue tooth services to automatic. This works 75% of the time.

To get to services, go to search and type services.

Didn't work. What happens is when I uninstall the printer and then add it again it will show up in the Devices and Printers. But when I reboot I get a message saying that new drivers were added and then its gone. What the heck could it be? This is a brand new computer.

Next time that you install the printer, go to device manager (or maybe in the case of a printer devices and printers) and make sure you have the most updated driver. If not download at that point. Make sure that the latest driver is recognized.

Also, go to the company website to make sure you have the most current driver. Look for firmware, too.

Problem solved. I hope this helps others.

I uninstalled the printer. Then opened up Device Manager. At this point you must highlight any listing with one click. Then open the Action tab and click on "Add Legacy Hardware". From there I picked the non-recommened option so I could manually pick the hardware from a list. Make sure you pick windows update so the list will be complete. I picked HP then Laserjet 6P. Presto. I rebooted and my HP printer is still intact on the Devices and Printers window. I am happy

Problem came back again. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it. Thanks.

PS. I will try the above fix again because Microsoft sent an updated driver and it installed. May have to try again. I won't hold my breath though.

Update. I believe problem is now solved. It turns out that port LPT1 was being shared by Quicken PDF. I uninstalled and re-installed with my last method but chose port LPT2 and it works great. I have rebooted several times and printer icon is still there.

Unfortunately it will not print a document from this port. Not sure what to do now.

Get your computer up and working, again the way it was when you wrote this. It is a small problem, that the printer disappears ocassionally.

From the MS forum, I believe that the first answer to the question given in that forum, is the cause of your problem.

HP Laserjet 5000n printer not visible in control pannel (Devices and Printers)
