CPU @ 100% when i connect to internet

hey guys, new here great website BTW. i am having problems with my laptop, i'm running win7 home basic and everytime i connect to the internet (note, i am tethering my phone) my CPU usage spikes up to 100%. i have tried disabling windows updates to see if that was causing the spike and it still does it. only things running for the most part are FF and MSE and the other normal processes for windows. i have scanned for viruses/malware and have came up clean. i'm puzzled.

    Hello Angel,

    Welcome to Seven Forums.

My first thought is that an add on to Firefox might be the problem. Something not loading correctly maybe. Does this happen in IE8? Try disabling all the add ons in FF and see if that fixes it. If it does then turn them back on one at a time to find the culprit.

Would also help if you filled in all your system specs. You can do so by clicking on the My System Specs link at the bottom of one of your posts. If you don't know what hardware you have, you can use this tool to help you out. VistaForums SysInfo Tool - Vista Forums

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Angel,

To give you a better idea of what could be causing the 100% cpu spike, hold down the ctrl and alt keys, then at the same time press del. Click Start Task Manager, then click on the processes tab. You can then click on the CPU column to list of running processes in ascending or descending cpu usage percentage.
Take a screen snip if you like and post it back here in your reply (Start orb, All programs, Accessories, Snipping Tool.)

thanks for the replies guys, but it is not doing it now :wat: lol. last time i had checked task manager svchost was using up most of the cpu. ATM it is fluctuating between 05%-30% and idling at 02%. i'm guessing it was windows update trying to find, download and install updates, crappy tethering FTL

I'd be inclined to turn off automatic updates, install Microsoft Security Essentials then go to the nearest internet cafe with high speed cable to do all my updates etc. if it's a fresh installation of 7.
Be sure to download all the optional updates that you need too, then turn auto updates back on.
After all updates are complete, tether up and check task manager again :)

A common cause of this affect is a large HOSTS file with the DNS Client service enabled. If using a large (ambiguous word) HOSTS file, disable the DNS client in Services.
