Hey man, This question comes around a lot in my life due to being married, owning a home, car and etc.
So tossing cash around gets hard and picking which item to buy takes it toll. You have to look at the long run. Yes ATI and Nvidia are just getting into DX11 so we will see better card come the end of the first quarter or so. Also the the price of the cards will drop once the newest item hits the streets which is what I wait for. I never buy the newest item on the block due to cost and in 4 months its half the cost. Now looking at you CPU which is an item that people dont replace as much as video card I would go for a cooling system with the money now and upgrade to the hd5850 down the road when the newer card comes around. But like everything you have to look at the longer road ahead. Are you going to keep a hd5850 card for two years or the CPU for two years? This is what I would ask just due to the price of the items your looking at.
Also you never did say what type of cooler you had in mind that would help out a bit if you had something in mind to compare the video card and cooler/cooling system you where looking at.

The above poster seems to be more in my age backet then yours. I can give you the results of the poll right now. The older crowd will say the cooler, protect your investment. The younger crowd will tell you, tomorrow may never come, have fun today.

    So, its up to you.

You don't say why you want a new (CPU?) cooler. Are you considering overclocking? If not, I wouldn't bother. (That assumes that you're not doing it mostly as PC jewelry.)

Graphics cards offer constant changes in the state of the art. What you buy today will be replaced by something better or cheaper (or both) within a few months. The Radeon 58X0 series seems to be pretty good hardware from the start. I'm not convinced that the drivers are perfect yet.
