I'm going out on a limb here. But I have an older Compaq Presario 2100 laptop. It drove me nuts with this whirring / whoshing sound but at very low volume, Finally I figured it out. It was an auxillery exhaust fan that would come on randumly

Thanks guys, I read kodi's post in the boing topic and I believe you guys are correct it could be my card reader trying to connect to the laptop!

so I will uninstall the card reader completely and see if windows can detect it properly instead of me manually installing it!... then see if the sound is still happening

    Okay, still same problem
It has to be the card reader tho..but I do not know how I can get it to work!

    Here are the images
    of it successfully installing
(but yet it does not work- I put several different brand cards in and still nothing gets detected)

Okay, I googled everywhere and found this one
Windows XP and Vista (32/64-bit) TI Media Card Reader Driver

and that one works perfect! my card reader works and now I dont hear the sound!

So it had to be from the card reader... I am one happy camper now!

But weird that the gateway support driver works and the acer driver i got from acer website does not work!

Edit: By the way thanks guys for the help!
I will stay on this forum cause its a great place to get help and alot of neat stuff while I was browsing!

    Okay, sorry about this

The boing sound is still with my laptop- after I gave it a few days with the new drivers

Could it be the fan? I notice when my fan turns off & on the boing sound happens more often!

Is there a driver for the fan? lol
That sounds dumb but I am not a big techy

    Fan

no fan driver but you might check the bios options for any fan controls also you may try one of those laptop cooler pads if it is a heat issue and the fan is coming on and going off all the time it may help
