CPU heatsink lapping...???
I've just finished reading a few different tutorials on how to lap a cpu/heatsink.
Has anyone here done that and are the temp differences really that big?
One guide only showed a 2 degree drop.

My experience has been that lapping the heatsink will not give you much relief in temp for an overclocked processor. Its a lot of delicate work, sourcing sand paper and thermal paste will cost you a couple of bucks ($20-$40) plus your own labor.
For a 2-3 deg c difference. As I counsel all custom builders any mods you make will shorten your system's life and damage components.

The 2-3 degree gain you get from lapping only makes sense if:
your goal is to squeeze every last mhz out of your hardware , in which case shaving off 2-3C might help you get you that last 5Mhz stable OC.
So, unless your a hardcore overclocker,or shooting for a record, its not worth the effort.
Good thermal paste that we have nowadays renders lapping virtually redundant, I'm not even convinced it ever did have a 2-3 degree impact for that matter, but when I was a youngster people used to chrome plate their exhaust manifolds and swear blind their motor went faster as a result...

I guess lapping it isn't really worth it for the gain.
But the temps im getting Right now are around 37c/39c on idle.
Others may disagree, but IMHO, ignore idle temps for the most part.
Idle temps can often be inaccurate.
Temps also tend to be more and more accurate the closer to TJMAX you get.
So, IMO, full load temps is where it all matters, and will the the most accurate judge. this is the most important factor.
On the subject of thermal paste:
I have found and come to really like MX2. From my experience, it seems to keep things slightly cooler than AS. And being non-conductive is a good thing too.
Switched completely over to it myself, so MX-2 would be my recommendation :)
OCZ ICE I hear is even better, but hard to work with. <--- no exp with this one though.
Try Arctic Céramique, that's non-conductive and works beautifully... :)
