    Losing CD-ROM drive

I have a new Acer Aspire 4810T that came with Vista. I have done the upgrade to Windows 7 and now when I insert a disk into the CD-ROM drive,or just close the drive the drive disappears from Device Manager as I watch! Also, I sometimes need to use a paperclip to open the drive.
When it was running Vista, I remember seeing a power option that allowed turning off the CD-ROM to improve performance. I no longer see that option in Windows 7.
The only way I can get the drive to work is to reboot, but that is a pain!
    Any ideas please?

    Hello,

Have you tried updating your CD drive drivers? Go into Device Manager and right-click on the drive. If it says they are up-to-date, try finding them manually, by going to the manufacturer's site.

Thanks, already done that, It is a brand new laptop, 3 weeks old. There are no new drivers and Windows 7 picks up the same one when I uninstall the old one.

May a faulty drive. Since the laptop is under warranty, check with the supplier for a solution.

Possible, but it worked fine under vista for about 2 weeks. It only started this after upgrading to Windows 7.

See if the system boots from a bootable CD. If it does, then the Windows install may be corrupt, and you may have to reinstall Windows.
If it does not, then the drive's cable may be either loose or bad, or the drive may be bad.
