    iPhone continually disconnects/reconnects

Machine is a Dell Precision T3500 workstation, Xeon E5520 quad-core processor, 12GB RAM, shipped with Vista 64 Ult. and did in-place upgrade to 7 x64 Professional.

iPhone appears to be recognized by Windows 7 and is able to sync with iTunes, but when connected, it continually switches between charging and not charging, which I assume it's actually connecting and disconnecting from the computer. It does this without end as long as the phone is docked. This is an older iPhone (original model).

Device Manager shows Intel entries for almost everything under System Devices and USB controllers, so I assume the issue is not the one on the Microsoft KB about USB devices and nVIDIA chipsets. Also since it's a Xeon processor I assume it's not the P55 chipset issue (socket 1156 core i5/i7 processors), as this one uses a socket 1366 motherboard with the Xeon processors.

Anyone have a clue would could be the issue?

It may be that the computer is thinking that phone is going to sleep or something and continually sending out wake up signals, which cause the continual refreshing.

    any idea of a remedy?

This is my boss's phone/PC. It appears my 3GS phone is fine when I connect mine to his computer.
