7 dynamically 'adapts' depending on whether it's x86 / x64, how much total RAM is installed and how many resources are needed.

If you had2GB,4B,8GB,12GB,32GB etc it would allocate more and more as more physical memory is installed.

    It's 'smooth performance' thing.

    What SmartEyeball said :)

    mine with 8Gb:
is around 1.4- 1.5 on boot.
After an hour or 2 of normal/light use its typically around 1.8-1.9GB.

With 43 processes running on my current system (see specs) I use 1.06 GB. If I had purchased this computer from the store with 7 already installed it would have been closer to 70 processes and 1.4GB used. the funny thing is 64-bit Ubuntu using the KDE desktop, which has comparable visual effects to windows 7, only loads up 450MB to memory but takes longer to boot.

As to why a 64 bit system uses more memory, I don't have that answer. I'm not even sure it uses more memory, as there's a different set of processes for 64 bit windows. They may have the same names as those from a 32 bit system, but it's not the same information that's loading into memory. And that 200 MB difference is minuscule compared to the amount of memory that can be used with a 64 bit system.
I'm in the process of building a desktop with 24GB of memory.

On my laptop at work with 4GB of RAM, Windows 7 Enterprise 32-bit, running Firefox, Outlook, Trend AV, CheckPoint client, and an Instant Messenger client is running at 1.05GB used which is showing about 30% of my physical memory according to Task Manager. Looking at physical memory stats, out of my 3571MB of RAM, 1084 is cached, 2494 is available and 1499 is free.

On my work desktop with 4GB of RAM, running Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit, with MSE running and no other applications opened is using 919MB of RAM...so a total of 22% according to Task Manager. Looking at physical memory stats, out of my 4095MB of RAM, 3076 is cached, with 3176 available and 117 free.
