Problems with HP J4580 Printer

Hi All:
New member here. I upgraded my friends HP Desktop (A Pavillion) to W7 and I ran into the same issues as Keith. The printer worked fine with VISTA but then after Win7, Nothing.
I called HP 5 Times. I finally got the
HP Officejet Full Feature Software and Driver (292MB!!) and when I wet ti run it, it told me that I didn't have enough space in the "Default" location.
My C: has ~740 GB of Free Space so that could not be it.
There is a D: Partition that has ~13GB available so I think that is where the Installation file is looking for room. Problem hee is that the D: Partition is the factory Image and there is a BIG Warning lable that comes up if you explore it stating that if you delete ANY files from here, all bets are off! Guess what the HPNGuy told me to do? Yes, delete files form the D:.
I eventually got to the OS Folks in MUMBAI, they remotely controled my machine and they got the same results.
I have tried everything:
Downloaded the Full Driver-feature File- Didn't work
Downloaded the dot4patch_reboot.exe File -Didn't work
Downloaded the
HP Officejet Software and Driver Removal Utility-Didn't Work. Actually not even the HP Guys were able to get it to work!!!
So at a point of desperation I thought to scream HEEEEEELP and hope you guys can help me. My friends PC is his Business Machine and he needs to print invoices and the like. Funny thing is that he can Scan and Send Receive FAXes.
HP Tells me that this is a Printer problem and that if I want their help I have to pay.
Somebody help me!!!!
Thanks
TechLoco (Mauricio)

OK Whest,
I went to the HP site downloaded all the correct software for windows 7 ( yes the J4580 printer) and even had the HP tech on the phone ( and gave them control to do whatever they liked to get it to work properly. After 5 hours 1 day and 4 hours the next day I was getting a little frustrated when this last person said they were sure they could get it to work properly and the AGAIN could not ... we installed . uninstalled the software 5 times and cleaned everything off my computer that had to do with the j4580 and still no avail. now I just want to say this outloud ( been thinking it for a while) if HP sells computers and allows Microsoft to put windows 7 in their computer MAYBE they should have all the drivers down pat first ... ya see I bought a brand new HP compyuter with win 7 on it .... only to find out the printer my husband bought me for Xmas doesn't work properly with windows 7 .. should I trash 7 and go back to XP ? or should HP buy this printer from me until they can get drivers for it and get me one that actually works with my HP computer?

Well. its a tough one - did you have to install the the driver software firstly, and wait for it to instruct you when to connect the printer? If this order is required it can be hard to install with a subsequent tries, as it leaves the system with files or registry entries that dont work (this happened to me with XP with my Hp printer and i had to reinstall the OS to get to install properly using the correct method, fortunately they made a basic driver for Windows Vista and W7 which didn't require that install method and you could have the printer connected during install of W7 then just use windows update after installation, and find the driver in optional hardware then download the driver.

Did you try installing the driver thru device manager and locating the inf. file? There are instructions here (this works the same with W7 : You cannot install a device driver by using its installation program in Windows Vista

Yes we ran the software with the printer unplugged and only plugged it in ( usb) when prompted and btw when it said it was installing the drivers.. it runs then says in a little box on the bottom left DRIVER NOT INSTALLED ..... now the thing is I can use my printer ,fax,copier...but I cannot use the software that WAS supposed to be included with it and the software on the HP site is the one I talked about previously ( which would not istall the driver) now after 3 HP techs and myself ( and I am no slouch on the computer) cannot get the thing to work I am thinking it is a software problem .. and therefor I revert back to what I said maybe they shouldn't allow Microsoft to install a system that is not compatible with their products being the computer is an HP also As far as the files left buy the numerous installs each time all the files were removed by what they like to refer to as a LEVEL 3 uninstall Find me the driver ( the real driver just the driver and I will install it ) the only thing they offer is a basic and the full now the basic ( we tried also) and still the same DRIVER NOT INSTALLED And as far as the instructions for windows vista This printer has a problem with windows 7 upgrade from vista and had problems with just windows 7 so I am still at a loss HELP PLEASE lol

Oh removing the files is more than just finding the obvious ones it was so complicated the instructions for removing all traces for mine, and with the statement this may not work, I gave up after one try, and reinstalled my OS, which fixed it, as I said.

Im sorry I havent any more ideas except if you run out of options reinstall the OS and try to install the basic driver - this basic driver would probably be available thru windows update. If your doing an upgrade I would change that to clean install :

Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version[3]=Installation and Setup

Clean Install Windows 7[3]=Installation and Setup

Well thanks but as I said the basic driver is fine I can use my printer scanner fax and copier.... but I have to use it through the printer face not through the program that I am SUPPOSED to be able to use for it.I am just upset that HP doesn't have the correct driver for the SOFTWARE that was supposed to be used with it!You are correct the basic driver works for the BASIC use of the printer.however if I go in and try to find the driver it said no driver installed and then disables the printer lol it is a weird thing .I will not reinstall the OS and have to backup everything just so I can try YET AGAIN and not succeed. thanks for your input though and maybe HP shoud just get their high paid people to make the correct driver for the PROPER software

Sorry I keeep having trouble understanding what you have done - yes the software wont work if it is written for a different driver. Since you can use the printer you might be able to work around some of your problems.

Did you read these pages, do you need the patch?

OK plain and simple "I" didn't do alot .. the HP tech did and they told me that they did a level 3 clean of all HP products that would effect the printer.( removal of all printer related things).then they did a clean reinstall .... and no I didn't upgrade from Vista I bought a new computer with windows 7 the patch( I was told) won't work.I will have to work around it .. the point was and still is that they allowed an OS to be installed on their machine without ensuring that the drivers for the exhisting products are in place.( and I don't mean an OLD printer it was brand new in Dec.).

Well, you welcome to fight them, you have my sympathy, but they would be legally covered, and you would be lucky to get anything out of them except maybe a refund of the money they charged for their unsuccessful help. I can see why you dont want to reinstall the OS, and your correct in disregarding that option, as it should of worked first time around. Best of luck in the future - try to focus on something else for a while, as the worst part about PC issues is recovering mentally from the frustration, and anger caused by others.
