What does this mean?

Harddrive is ALWAYS on when your PC has power, regardless if you have nothing running, has to get the OS from the HDD at some stage...

i know it's always on. I mean t is spinning (working) while I am doing nothing at the destop. By spinning, I mean the little green lite that indicates spinning is on most of the time.

That light represents the HDD being accessed, possibly Search Indexer, or AV doing a scan perhaps?

AV scan, defrag, indexing...any of these things could be running in the background and accessing your hard drive.

You have to check the processes that are running at that time - either in Task Manager or Process Explorer.

CD Drive Spinning
At random times my CDROM drive will spin up and never stop. This has happened with various OS's and the only common factor I think is the AV. I reckon that the AV is detecting that there is a CD in the drive and spinning it up to check it. Having fired it up it never stops spinning unless...

Sleep and spinning down hard drives
Whenever I put my computer to sleep I hear the secondary drive (not the boot drive) spin down, and then the chassis power led starts blinking like it's supposed to when in S3 sleep mode. At this point in time I expect power to go off, i.e. fans stop spinning, signifying a complete transition to S3...
