How do you boot to DOS to install Bios Update?

Well in the old days we had the boot disk that we'd insert if we wanted to boot up to DOS. But I've gone stupid on how to do that in Windows 7.

I have a bios update that I want to install. Here are the instructions that I received but step 4 reads "Boot the system to DOS by using the bootable device." I'm not sure how to do that. It instructs you to put it on a USB key, but when I boot to the key I get the message "No operating system found." So there must be a step to make the device bootable?

Any insight? Here are the full instructions that I got when I downloaded the updated bios.

    Thanks, Greg

    Installation
NOTE: You must provide a DOS bootable media, such as a USB key. This executable file does not create the DOS system files.
    1. Browse to the location where you downloaded the file.
    2. Update the name of the file to DOS recognizable format (8.3). If you do not update the filename to 8.3 format, the filename will be truncated to 8.3 format.
    3. Copy the file to the bootable device.
    4. Boot the system to DOS by using the bootable device.
    5. Run the executable under DOS. Follow the instructions provided by the flash utility.
