external HD crash

Hi,

Last december I bought a Verbatim 1.5Tb external HD usb2.o.

Recently it started to tick when starting up, and took a while to get recognized by the computer.

I started to make a backup of the media on it, but the HD completely gave up during this process.

Now it can't be seen at all.

When i restart the HD, it gives me 10 ticks on about a 1 sec interval, then spins down again.

From what i can find on the web so far this is known as tick of death.

Is there anyway to get data recovery from this HD, or even to get it recognized again by windows?

If I can get some acces, I have spinrite to try to recover as much as possible.

Need help ASAP with this.

In many cases, the problem with external HDDs is not the drive itself, rather it is the interface circuitry (from my own experience). Can you remove the drive from its enclosure and see if you can access it if you connect it as an internal drive? I think that you will need to do so anyway if you are planning on using Spinrite on it.

Spinrite does recognize my 500Gb external hd.
I'm hesitant about oping it as its still under warranty.

Total crash only happened this weekend, so i'm gonna try to find a data recovery agent around here 1st without voiding the verbatim warranty.

the HD used to store my music, pics and movies so no important data is lost.

Just a lot of entertainment

If i do have to open it up, I may contact you again for some tech help if that's ok

OK. Did you try a different USB cable and port on your system?
