I think I'll carry on being obsessive by 'safely removing the hardware' first
It's always better to be safe than sorry.

But you can just as easily go to my computer and right click then eject it... gets you the same result, even pops up the little balloon thingy saying it's safe to remove.

    I'm wreckless I guess... I do it ValorD's way.

As stated, printers and other similar devices don't need it, but I always Safely Remove USB flash sticks and externals.

I notice that some USB hubs I plug stick into don't even show the Safely Remove tray icon, esp with XP.

I do unplug my stick after closing it out if this happens but wonder why this is the case. Anyone know?

    same issue for me

I sometimes have the eject hardware stop working. reboot fixes it but that is way too painful. Windows nees to come up with a fix.

I've had this issue from day one with my ASUS eEE PC and Windows 7 starter. Whenever I plug in a thumb drive and click on the green safely remove hardware icon nothing happens. I can go into explorer and eject it manually, but it's a little annoying for a function that should work.

Do you use a USB hub?

Is this a clean install, or inferior in-place Upgrade or factory bloatware install?

Consider a Repair Install or Clean re-install windows 7

That is how it came from a factory install. I might try to wipe it and re-install.

Are you referring to an external HD? An internal HD should not be removed while the computer is under power.

If you get no response to Safely Remove an external or flash stick, make sure all files or programs which are/were being used by the drive are closed, then try again. You can then remove the drive, or if you want to be extra sure wait until you've powered down.

Normally Safely Remove will respond one way or the other. If it persists in never responding, then I would run SFC -SCANNOW Command - System File Checker.

If this doesn't help you may need a Repair Install.
