Scan and Fix prompt everytime I connect external USB

Hi there I get the following message everytime I connect my external USB hard drive :

Do you want to scan and fix (E:) TV Shows ?

Anyway I've got a lot of important data on there and don't want to lose it. If I choose to Scan and fix it, will it erase the data ?

I don't know why Windows is giving this message in the first place, everything on the hard drive seems to be working fine as far as I know. It's just annoying seeing it everytime I connect it to my computer.

So my questions is, what will happen If I "Scan and Fix it" ?

A quick Google search found someone who said the problem was due to unclean dismount (yanking the drive out of the plug instead of ejecting it from the OS first).

One possible solution looks like this:

Insert the USB drive.
Empty your recycle bin (see if it prompts you to remove the corrupt item and do so).
Go onto the USB drive, unhide your system files, and delete the "$RECYCLE.BIN" file.

thanks for your help, unfortunately that didn't seem to work. I still get the "Scan and Fix" prompt everytime I connect it to my computer.

I guess it's not a huge deal, however I just want to know what will happen If I choose to "Scan and Fix". I really really don't want it to erase my data !

I'm curious about it too because everything I've read says to absolutely not click "Scan and Fix."

Hi, same here
No matter if I execute scan and fix or cancel the prompt. It happens with all my portable drives (HDD and flash) It just a nuisance. Could not find a fix for it.

1) Typically this prompt means that a delayed write wasn't completed (i.e. a cache wasn't flushed successfully) and it marks the drive signature as dirty and needing to be scanned.

Try disabling Write-caching on the removable drive i.e. optimize for safe removal. Heres a tutorial to help you do that.

2) If you have already disabled caching and the problem still occurs, the only thing I can think of is to disable the following Services - Diagnostic Policy Service, Diagnostic Service Host and the Diagnostic System Host.

Be aware that disabling these services will also stop any prompts from Action Center if Windows detects some piece of hardware or driver malfunctioning. So this step is not recommended as a permanent measure but only for troubleshooting purposes.

No luck with write cache thing fix. I have seen Vista64 users complaining about the same issue. It suggests it is 64bit related fault.

I tried DarkRhystar's suggestion in Windows 7 64 bit, but access is denied within command prompt and I'm told to invoke utility in elevated mode. Tried running it as admin and no dice. Get the same error. Advice?
