Many people recommend creating 2 partitions, 1 for the OS and programs, and 1 for users files.

That way if they need to reinstall, their music and pictures and stuff are on a different partition, and all they need to do is reinstall their programs.

If you decide to go that route, I would probably do something like a 300+200 GB setup.

I don't recommend this for XP, though. Windows 7 makes that kind of thing easy, with Libraries, but it may get confusing for the user. Their user folder would be on the C drive, and that's also where they install programs, but they store their files on the D drive.

Personally, I would just have the one 500GB partition.

    Hi and welcome

It has to be partitioned. My view is to create 2 partitions. One for the OS (30 gigs for xp) and the other for the data. That way if the OS ever needs to be installed the data is still intact

That works too. Just remember that not all programs can be installed to other drives, so be sure to leave enough space on the OS partition to accommodate that.

50GB should be plenty, as there are not that many programs like that.

once again thanks for the feed back. i have another question concerning the HD, its a SATA HD, and if i recall correctly the drivers for the SATA drive have to be installed during the XP installation, i have a Gigabyte MB GA-MA74GMS2H with the disk, is that going to be a problem getting the XP OS installed ?
