It's too bad that you have eliminated all of the Intel processors from your choices...as today they are the best performing CPU's out there. There was a time that AMD was the gamer CPU of choice....but right now they are getting beat out by the Intel's.

Give us the details on your mobo and such and we can help out. You must have an AM2 or AM3 socket with your current board. You aren't planning to upgrade the board as well are you.

    If you have an AM2 socket, then the 5600+ is the best you can get ( Newegg.com - AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ Brisbane 2.9GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 65W Dual-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops ) provided your mobo can support it.

I have a Gigabyte ga-m61pme-s2p. I'm pretty sure its AMD bound only, but I'm not TOO sure.

    Per Gigabyte site:

    1. Support for Socket AM3/ AM2+/ AM2 processors: AMD Phenom™ FX processor/ AMD Phenom™ X4 processor/ AMD Phenom™ X3 processor/ AMD Athlon™ X2 processor/ AMD Athlon™ processor/ AMD Sempron™ X2 processor/ AMD Sempron™ processor

(Note) If you install AMD AM3/ AM2+ CPU on AM2 motherboard, the system bus speed will downgrade from HT3.0 (5200MT/s) to HT1.0 (2000 MT/s) spec; however, the frequency of AM3/ AM2+ CPU will not be impacted. Please refer "CPU Support List" for more information.

Need to look at the Bios version to see which CPU in those classes it will support.

Two versions of that MB 1.0 and 1.3 . Which version do you have.
Here are the links to the supported CPU by Bios F?

Looks like the Phenom II X4 945 is the highest supported on both rev depending on Bios.

You might not see much difference in games since the video card is doing most of the work. Now if you went with a AM3 board and DDR3 memory you may see some increase. Might be better to just save you money for a future update of MB,Memory,CPU and Video Card.
