    HDD with boot files died

    Hi!

I just upgraded to Win7 Professional 64-bit from Vista a week ago and had a hard drive die. The OS and boot files were loaded as such:

    C: OS
D: Boot manager files (drive is dead)

I tried the recovery option via the Win7 DVD and got a "cannot repair" message.

I looked into bcdedit.exe but none of the options work. I think I'm missing a step somewhere. Can anyone assist?

    Thanks!

    Welcome!

You will need to mark your Windows partition as Active and then run startup repair. See these posts:

Thank you Jonathan, that was a simple recovery process.

In case someone runs by this post before reading the Common Installation Problems thread, here is exactly what I did:

    1) Follow the instructions to activate the correct partition.
    2) Run the setup DVD, which repaired automatically (no prompting except for the restart).
    3) Run the setup DVD and selected repair startup problems.

    Voila!
