Need help. On my Gigabyte EP43-UD3L mobo ; Q8200 2,33GHz I have 2x1G OCZ PC2 9600 [1200MHz] memory. My question is can I add two more 2Gb sticks let's say PC2 6400 [800MHz] or PC2 5300 [333 MHz]
Just what it shows in CPU-Z v.1.53 > CPU FSB = 1333MHz and memory runs in 333MHz Thanks in advance
PC2-5300 memory is 667mhz when you factor in double data rate. As far as adding slower memory your speed will automatically be reduced to the slowest memory speed provided other things like timings and voltages are capatible. Mixing memory is always similar to a roulette wheel when things are mismatched.
The ideal solution when going to add more memory on any system is the same make, type, and speed even from the same manufacturer's batch to avoid ending up with problems from mixing. You wouldn't performance memory with standard dimms being two different types. In some cases a minor difference in timings can see an adjustment in the dram timings setting in the bios.
These are all factors to consider.
I think you are absolutely right NightHawk. Little problem is to get exact match OCZ with mine two sticks. Specialy I would like to add 2x2Gb sticks. I bought it on special was happy with fast RAM and now later on run in trouble a bit. Well I might try to sell it and get four same brand sticks. Thanks for gimme some light on my prob.
If you run into any bad dimms or one develops faults at some point having the exact same memory to replace them with is also a plus to consider! Another thing to add is once you have pair of dimms that runs like a champ on the board you have you will want to stay with the same when adding to that. In most cases it works out for the best!
