Fascinating thread. I got curious so I opened my case and looked at my AMD CPU heat sink and the fan is blowing down toward the CPU. I then pulled a few copies of CPU and MaximumPC magazines and looked at the adds and pictures. In every case the fans were blowing toward the CPU or GPU on video cards. All the adds for after market HSF were setup the same way. So I have to believe that the manufactures have determined that blowing toward the chip is the best. It has been a good discussion and a lot better then "Which AV is Best????" Some disagreement but no one got shot

But how do you know which way they were spinning?
Easy. Put your hand in front of them.
    In the pictures and magazines?

Woops, totally ignored the magazine part. Then just read any captions or articles associated with the pictures. You can also look at where the logo is on the fan, etc.

If you look at the design of the fan blades you can tell. Look at this link for a picture of a fan. Notice on the right edge it shows counterclockwise rotation and air flow to the back. Notice the shape of the blade with a cup design to the rear.

I buy a retail CPU and install the stock heatsink/fan combo. It does whatever it does with the air. I assume those making the CPU know what works well for their product. Not very scientific, but it works for me.

I prefer push pull configuration with coolers that allow this. I find it interesting that all stock coolers are st up to exhaust over the radiator.
