GPS, serial port and windows 7

Hi all, I'm quite desperate! In the middle of the sea with computer not working. I need to connect my laptop with windows 7 to a gps (Garmin 72H) to downòoad data. The Gps has a serial port and OFF COURSE my laptop not. I have a convertor COM-USB with driver but is not working. With XP I could create a virtual com port but I'm not able to do that with Windows7. When I connect the cable in Device manager in Other device a USB-serial controller is popping up with question mark. Usually there was an advanced bottom and from that I could create a virtual com. How can I do with Windows 7? Thank you very much for any suggestion.

    Marina, welcome to the forums
can you give details about the COM-USB converter? maybe we can help find the drivers, that seems to me would be the best solution?
Have you tried installing the ones you have in compatibility mode?

Hi all, thank you for you replay. You save me to write down latitude and longitude every minutes for 10 hours . I found a cd for one of the cable and I installed the version for vista; I also downloaded the last 3 updates for windows 7.
The cable is working perfectly now!!!!
Thank you thank you thank you.
