I have the exact same DVD drive in my test rig, and I didn't have to do squat with the firmware when installing Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Wiggle the ribbon cable around at it's seating point in the drive while it's plugged in, with the power off, before you go fooling around with firmware. It could be a coincidence that it began to act like this after installing Windows. It's not uncommon. While your at it, wiggle it around at the motherboard header too.

Better yet, try a different ribbon cable if wiggling it around doesn't work. This sounds like a bad cable.

And since it's a new drive [which model I also own] I'm almost certain it won't be a firmware issue. I guess we'll find out shortly though. I'm not ruling anything out at this point in the game.

Just tried to wiggle the IDE cables with no success. CD/DVD still taking ages to read, and cant open files. Could this be a problem with the lens in the optical drive?

Have you any 3rd party dvd software installed - this can cause problems - if you have it may need updating or uninstalling to see if it makes any difference.

I thought it was newer drive than that, as i looked at the specs, and it supported dual layer burning and dvd ram - sorry I guess i was wrong.

I was about to say - the 111D is far from a new model

To eliminate Windows / drivers being an issue, does the drive have any problems reading a bootable disc?

ie Try booting from the 7 installation disc , or any other disc that is bootable - such as an XP installation disc, linux live CD, memtest etc

If you have trouble reading outside of Windows, then the drive itself may either be failing, or the lens is dirty etc

The installation of Seven may just be a coincidence.

Have you tried uninstalling the dvd drive in device manager, and rebooting - then windows redetects it, and reinstalls the driver?

Articles and fixes below maybe of help.

Your CD or DVD drive cannot read or write media

Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

With the lens you can get a cd /dvd lens cleaner - it has small brushes on a cd which when rotated will remove dust from the lense - so you just put it in and let it do its work. Be careful as it may not be related to a dirty lense - up to you!
